Day 7: Works on Paper/Drawing at Stazzione Santa Maria Novella

Our morning studio session focused on finding inspiration in the planar forms of objects with a reverse-engineering demonstration, followed by students developing a paper manipulation/sculptural paper project.  In the afternoon we drew at the  Stazzione Santa Maria Novella.  We drew people for a few hours in this bustling train station.  It is amazing to see the range of emotion and body language concentrated here.

Day 30: Il Duomo / Figure Drawing

Day 30: Duomo, Musuem / Figure Drawing We conclude our classes here in Florence with the central feature of the old city, the Duomo.  The Duomo (cathedral) is so big and tall that we all tend to navigate by this central landmark. Students got up early to walk some 463 steps up to the top of the dome of the cathedral. Burnaleschi's dome is his masterpiece in architecture with a double shell, unique harringbone construction, built without a centering.  Until modern architectural materials, the dome was the largest in the world. It is still the largest brick dome ever constructed. After the view of the dome, students met up at the Duomo musuem to draw from sculpture by Michelangelo, Donatello, and many others. the Duomo the interior of the dome Michelle looks up into the  interior of the dome. Day 9: Works on Paper/San Miniato Al Monte

Lauren, Michelle, Kate, Hannah, and Maddi with a view above the city from San Miniato Day 9: Works on Paper/San Miniato Al Monte This morning students's projects are starting to take shape.  Their objective is to create a new work or works on paper exploring some of the material/sculptural qualities of manipulating paper for a critique on Monday. ...In the afternoon we took a city bus to the south end of the city at Piazzale Michelangelo and then a short walk up to San Miniato al Monte.  Professor Tiziana Landra presented an informative lecture on the art history of this Romanesque church with three levels and the sacristy.  Afterwards students looked for sketchbook inspiration in the view lover looking the city and the surrounding cemetery where many illustrious characters are buried.  Many students stayed for the evening mass in the church where monk sang in Gregorian Chant.
